The Ultimate Key To Happiness — Gratitude

Thank you God for the world so sweet,

Thank you God for the food we eat,

Thank you God for the birds that sing,

Thank you God for everything.

Remember reciting this ‘Thank You God’ rhyme reverently as kids? Back then happiness came easy and everything was rainbows and sunshine (it still is). But what was the reason behind this abundant reserve of joy and optimism? The answer lies in the rhyme itself — Gratitude. We were grateful towards each and everything that was given to us. Neither were we reluctant to ask for what we wanted nor were we afraid to trust people (a broken heart was an alien concept back then). What changed during these years, we can’t fathom or maybe we can but don’t want to. The bridge between then and now remains tattered.

Thank you God for the sleep in night,

Thank you God for the golden light,

Thank you God for the clear day panes,

Thank you God for the singing rains.

Instead of building a character we take pride in constructing fortifications that will protect us. Shattered hearts and tired souls are as common as stones in our streets. Gratitude and compassion has long been replaced by bitterness, resentment and fear. Instead of being thankful about what we have in the moment, which is way more than sufficient, we dwell on what couldn’t happen or what will not happen. Somewhere between all the juggling and adulting we forgot to live in the present. We forgot the magic that is in and around us.

Thank you God for the flowers and spring,

Senses to feel and lips to sing,

Thank you God for the peace they bring,

Thank you God for everything.

We forgot that life was never meant to be sorted. We forgot that what we have is exactly what is required to be happy. We forgot that the world around us is a reflection of ourselves. We forgot that all we need to do is count our infinite blessings. We forgot to mend the bridge that will take us to unfettered bliss. We forgot that all we need to do is say Thank You for everything we have.
